If you’re looking for a fun, easy activity to do with friends or children or teens that can be done safely distanced outdoors, try making your own turtle crossing signs. The best time to do this is in the spring, so that the signs can go up during the spring and summer, when turtles are… Continue reading Turtle Crossing Signs

Don’t try this at home! Sound on for narration. Here we showcase an important but unpleasant rehab task: force-feeding. We only do this when patients refuse to eat for a long period of time and all coaxing methods have failed, making them likely to starve. The sense of relief when you catch the picky eater finally going for the pellet food cannot be overstated, especially at the beginning of the overwintering season when live prey will be harder to come by without the hassle and expense of buying it all the time. Our turtles still get natural foods with regularity, but it is a lot harder to feed as many turtles as we need to when they refuse or don’t recognize commercial turtle food as edible. It takes the guesswork out of making sure they are getting all the nutrients they need, and it’s a heck of a lot more convenient when you’re caring for multitudes of creatures on top of a full-time day job and a regular life. Haters can hate if they want to, but turtle pellets save lives. We wouldn’t be able to handle half the volume we currently handle around here, even with volunteer help, if we had to source fresh, live food for every single meal. We cycle through a few different brands to still give our animals some variety in the shelf-stable portion of their diets. Which ones do your turtles like best? Today! From 11-3, come visit our turtle table at this fun, FREE, family event, hosted by the Branford Compassion Club at the Guilford Fairgrounds. Special thanks to supporter Donna who makes our presence possible at this annual event. Click the link below to see a really great local news spot that just came out featuring Linda, our tireless Woodbridge rehabber! Look at you, actually having eyes under all that swelling! Two weeks ago, this gentleman arrived on a cold and miserable day in the way-too-early hours of the morning, with eyes swollen shut, mucus clogging his nose, and an audible rasp in his lungs that was loud enough to be heard through a closed door on the other side of the room. You shouldn’t be able to hear a turtle’s breathing if they are healthy. This poor fellow was gasping for air with every breath and I’m surprised he wasn’t eaten or injured in his deathly state—blind, slow, loud. But, I’ve been throwing everything I have at him to try and kick these infections, and it appears to be working. His breathing still sounds a bit like a lawnmower, but he moves around a little now and he’s able to open his eyes. This poor guy has a long winter in rehab ahead of him, but with steady care and a little bit of luck, we’ll get him strong again. Chip the box turtle gets physical therapy. *Sound on*
