Some of our long-term residents got to experience the wild outdoors recently after spending the winter inside, and one of them dug around until he found a gigantic lawn grub and ate it. I guess you could say he’s a fan of grub hub…get it? Ok, I’ll see myself out. Things that only happen in a rehabber house, lol. Rehabbers and rescuers, what are some unique exchanges you’ve had with family members due to your animal work? Meet Buttercup! She is a yellow-bellied slider looking for a forever home. We will have a booth to meet her and other adoptable turtles at the JCC of Greater New Haven (360 Amity Rd., Woodbridge, CT) on Sunday, May 3rd, from 10am-2pm. This is a free, family-friendly, educational adoption event with several community animal groups and vendors. Turtle season is upon us. Watch for turtles in the road and help them cross in the direction they were going. If it’s injured, take it with you and call a rehabber. The free app and website Animal Help Now uses your location to find the rehabber closest to you. Today is National Pet Day! We’d like to remind you that pet turtles are a lifelong commitment and not an easy, “starter pet”. Most commercially available species get very big and thus require a lot of space. Turtles also have different diets depending on species, need special lights, and can be difficult to keep clean. They can be wonderful companions with great personalities, but you have to be prepared for the responsibility of caring for another living being which may even outlive you. If you want a turtle, adopt, don’t shop, never steal native animals from the wild to be your pet, and never dump pet turtles into the wild. Thank you to Turt Cobain the tortoise and his fam for these very useful items from our wishlist!
